How to prepare your pool for the start of the season: a step by step guide

With the arrival of spring comes the ideal time to prepare your pool and enjoy the first dips in the water. With this practical guide, we explain how to give your pool a complete overhaul after the winter to ensure crystal-clear water, well-maintained facilities and safe swimming.

Why is it important to prepare the pool before the summer?

After the cold months, it is essential to check and clean all the components of the pool: from the pump and filter to the condition of the water. This not only extends the life of the equipment, but also prevents health problems and avoids unnecessary costs.

Checking the pool installations

 Checking the pump

– Check that the pool pump is in good condition.

– If it has been inactive during the winter, dismantle, clean and dry the pump before reinstalling it.

– Check the electrical wiring and replace any damaged components.

Cleaning the pool filter

The type of filter determines the type of maintenance:

Sand filter: check if the sand has lost thickness or is rounded. If it is more than 3 years old, it is advisable to replace it.

Cartridge filter: inspect the cartridge and clean or replace it if it is very dirty.

Aqualoon filter: if the balls are dirty, you can wash them in the washing machine.

Gre tip: at the end of the season, store the filtration system in a dry, protected place to prolong its life.

Removing and storing the winter cover

If you used a pool cover during the winter, now is the time to remove it:

– Clean it with water and neutral soap.

– Dry it thoroughly before storing it in a dry and ventilated place.

Summer pool covers help to maintain the water temperature and reduce the entry of dirt.

Checking the  pool elements

Check the condition of:

– Skimmers and baskets

– Grilles

– Light bulbs and return nozzles

Clean them thoroughly and replace any damaged ones. These small elements are key to correct water circulation and cleaning.

Cleaning the pool tank

Now that all the elements have been checked, it is time to thoroughly clean the pool tank:

– Use special pool brushes and sponges that do not damage the liner.

– Apply non-aggressive descaling products.

– Remove accumulated dirt with a manual or automatic pool cleaner.

At Gre we have a wide range of robotic pool cleaners that make this task easier and ensure complete cleaning of the bottom and walls.

Checking external elements

Don’t forget to check and clean:

– Ladders

– Springboards

These accessories are recommended to be stored in winter to avoid deterioration due to weather exposure.

Adjusting the pool water

Fill the water to the optimum level

The ideal level is halfway up to the skimmer.

Test the water parameters

Use a pool water analyser, such as the smart Blue Connect, and check the following values:

pH: between 7.2 and 7.6

Chlorine level: depending on the treatment system you use

Chemical water treatment

– Perform a shock chlorination if the water was not treated during the winter or if you have completely refilled the pool.

– Adjust the pH with booster or reducer to the recommended values. If you have any doubts you can check the following blog.

– Add algaecide and flocculant to remove micro-organisms, algae and debris.

Tip Gre: If the water is in bad condition and cannot be recovered, the pool will need to be emptied, cleaned and refilled.

Regular maintenance during the season

Once the season has started, follow this pool maintenance plan:

– Check pH and chlorine levels daily.

– Clean the surface with a leaf cleaner.

– Use the pool cleaner at least once a week.

– Add anti-algae and flocculant weekly.

– Clean and check the filter.

Enjoy a perfect pool all summer long!

With these steps, your pool will be ready to give you the best moments of the summer. Preparing your pool correctly not only ensures clean water, but also safer and more enjoyable swimming.
