How should you sanitize your pool?

Keeping your pool water clean is a key aspect of taking care of the health of those who use it. It is very important to sanitize your pool.

Sometimes, the water seems perfect but does not meet the minimum standards. In this post, we will give you guidelines so that you can sanitize your pool under proper  conditions. Take note of all the options provided!

Why It is essential to sanitize your pool

Outdoor pools are the perfect breeding ground for all types of microorganisms. When we use them, we leave both organic (example: sweat) and inorganic (example: lotion, sunscreen) residue in the water, which contributes to the growth of algae and fungi. This is why your pool needs to be maintained to keep it clean and suitable for use.

Options to sanitize your pool

At GRE, we recommend 3 ways to sanitize your pool:

  1. Chlorine

When it comes into contact with water, this pool sanitizer forms hypochlorous acid, which removes viruses thanks to its neutral electric charge, enabling it to enter the nucleus of pathogens and kill them. It works by attacking their proteins, which causes the structure of the bacteria to deteriorate.

Keep in mind that the pH of the water must be between 7.2 and 7.6 for chlorine to be effective.

  1. Bromine

This pool sanitizer is perfect for water with a high pH level. Chlorine may not be 100% effective when the pH is above 7.4, but bromine continues to be effective even when the pH is above 7.8.

Bromine is also effective at high temperatures (up to 40 ºC [104 ºF]), so it’s also the best option for spas and hot tubs.

Keep in mind that while a stabilizer can be used to protect chlorine from UV rays, the same thing does not apply to bromine. Therefore, if you use bromine in outdoor pools, which are exposed to sunlight, it will be depleted faster than chlorine, so you will have to replace it more often.

  1. Salt Chlorinators

Salt chlorinators use electrolysis to generate chlorine that sanitizes pools with salt.

This alternative has several advantages: It automatically generates and releases chlorine into the pool, it prevents you from having to store and handle chemicals, and it is completely safe since it only uses ordinary salt.
