What treatment does my pool need in winter?

To enjoy a pool in perfect condition in the summer, you must take care of it well throughout the year. Winter pool treatment is nothing out of the ordinary and will allow you to make the most of the summer in the best conditions.

Why winter pool treatment is important

Pools, like any property, require a range of care so that they aren’t damaged sooner than normal. Taking care of your pool is the best thing you can do to ensure it lasts you for years and your summers are full of memorable stories.

Pool maintenance is essential to keep the pool from getting dirty, the walls and bottom gleaming year-round, and the water transparent. Minor care throughout the year will prevent you from having to spend a lot of money to get it ready when the weather is good, not to mention the time and effort it would take to make it suitable to swim in.

Pools have a range of elements such as filters or skimmers that must be checked every so often. This is the only way to ensure they are working properly and you can have clean water in the best conditions.

Additionally, adequate winter pool treatment means you won’t have to change the water, which is a considerable savings—filling a pool isn’t exactly cheap—and a relief for nature since it is not advisable to waste as precious a resource as water. Keep in mind that, contrary to what many people think, it is neither necessary nor recommended to change your pool water every year.

From a financial standpoint, treating your pool during the winter means saving up to six times more money than if you had to clean algae, dirt, and other debris off when the time comes.

Winter pool treatment

Due to the importance of year-round pool maintenance, there’s a series of winter pool treatments that you can’t stop applying.

  • Clean the pool. You can use the vacuum to keep your pool clean year-round. However, it will not need the same care or frequency of cleaning in the summer, when the vacuum should be run daily, as in the winter, when the vacuum can be run more sparingly.
  • Keep the water level below the skimmer to prevent freezing, which may damage the device.
  • Use a winterizer, following the instructions, schedule, and amounts. This is something you must do several times throughout the year. To start this process, the water temperature must be below 15 °C (59 °F).
  • Check the amount of chlorine and pH level of the water every so often. If necessary, use a shock chlorination product.
  • Keep the pool filter clean. A dirty or damaged filter can easily ruin your pool.
  • Use a pool cover to prevent dirt and debris from falling in.
  • Safely store all your pool elements and products: the vacuum, chemicals, the leaf skimmer, hoses, etc.

Now you know how to treat your pool during the winter. Keep your pool in perfect condition year-round so that summer will be more summery than ever.
